Winner of the 2025 Opal and Lloyd Brooten Award from Art on the Green in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, Tom Groesbeck first picked up a paintbrush when hand surgery kept him from his artistic pursuit of woodcarving. Since then, his passion is plein aire painting and water color with most of his work beginning in the field and then finished in his studio in Spokane Valley, Washington. At present, he is happiest when he is painting the perfect beauty of the everyday. He seeks out the unobtrusive and brings it into view, reminding us along the way of the perennial beauty that surrounds us. As a native of Eastern Washington for most of his life, it comes as no surprise that Tom features the Spokane River in many of his paintings. Whether it’s a construction site in downtown, or the rushing waters of a bridge support, Tom’s paintings exalt the colors and textures of nature.
Tom has studied with artists whose style is both divergent and complementary to his own. He has worked with Joe Kronenberg, Howard Friedland, Terry Lee, Stan Miller, Zebith Thalden, and Jef Gunn, and continues to seek out workshops with other artists to further explore different styles and techniques.
Tom holds a BS in Biology and a BA in Geology from Eastern Washington University.
